De la profondeur des océans à la surface de l’eau, c’est la lumière en mouvement que l’artiste cherche à capter. Reflets de néon sur l’asphalte trempé, myriades d’anémones phosphorescentes jaillissant de l’ombre, la nouvelle série de l’artiste Tung-Wen Margue, nous convie à une véritable immersion dans un monde aquatique.

« How deep is the ocean ? » tel est l’intitulé de cette exposition de 2017 à la Galerie Clairefontaine, Luxembourg.

L’artiste s’est inspiré du free jazz et plus particulièrement du jazzman John Coltrane, adepte de la méditation et du travail sur le souffle. Le son et la lumière s’unissent et s’expriment dans le mouvement du pinceau. Tantôt c’est dans la lenteur que des formes appesanties apparaissent, comme des fantômes dans le noir, tantôt c’est à la vitesse de l’éclair que surgit une multitude d’étoiles ou micro-organismes, éphémères et multicolores qui suggèrent les lumières de la ville.

Vernissage: Thursday, April 27^th, 2017, 6-8 p.m. in the presence of the artist

These photographs are inspired by the famous set of woodcuts “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” Katsushika Hokusai produced between 1830 and 1832. Despite the wide variety of shown scenes, most of Hokusai’s colour prints share a common structure. In the foreground people are going about their daily business, the middle ground refers to a different time-scale like seasons or things decaying, and finally a glimpse of mount Fuji hints at changes too slow to be perceived during a human life.

Hokusai’s woodcuts are part of a genre called ukiyo-e, which means ‘images from a floating world’, floating both in time and in space. They are clearly composed in different layers, letting Mount Fuji hover above or next to the world of humans. Often civilisation intrudes graphically into Fuji’s sacred space. Trees or posts cut into the mountain’s silhouette, house roofs and other constructions imitate its triangular profile.

Hokusai’s prints share several elements with photographs: they represent fleeting moments, they create a memory of simple events and people’s relationship with time is a major subject in the images. Just as photographs the prints are mechanically reproducible and they were affordable and not considered high-brow art. This series is about time, about moments, seasons, years, lifetimes.

Monotypes play an important part in my work. They assist to keep the creative process in flow, they explore ideas and possibilities for paintings as well as enriching my experience of working in layers.

The small paintings on show have an overall receding space, consisting of many lines that create an overall energy.

The Blue Fir by Joe Allen

The Blue Fir stands alone and errect, mostly unnoticed, it is flanked on one side by a row of uniform mundane houses, and on the other by the main road bringing the traffic into town, and by the railway tracks,  that curve their way towards the station.

No one knows how long it has been here, but it has heard the thoughts of all the people who ever lived here. It has watched the old men smoking on their balconies, and it has noticed when they didn’t, and of the walls being cleared  of window boxes, and the sweeping of the floor, and the lowering of the shutters, and been moved by the silence.  It has watched children held up in their fathers arms, and proudly shown to neighbours and it has watched their mothers shake them by one arm until afraid and perplexed they burst into tears, and it wondered why they became mothers at all.

But in winter, its branches pushed down, heavy with snow it appeared a giver, a bearer of good tidings, throwing out its arms, and finches and robins and wrens would find shelter and food under its roof, and like an old soldier it stood, baring the way, dreaming of the northern lands.

A true treat for the eyes is currently on view at the Clairefontaine gallery in Luxembourg: still life photographs from concentration and inner peace, which are printed with precious platinum palladium on a high quality Gampi paper.

Ryuji Taira is a quiet observer, he loves nature and loneliness. He explains that, during hikes, faded plants or dead insects often fascinate him. An ephemeral nature expressed through them inspires the artist to seek a new beginning. He wants to immortalize the fragile beauty of these creations on platinum palladium prints. Giving an eternal character to their lives, their aesthetic appearancebetween life and death. Even dandelion clocks, which are poised to be blown away by the next blast of wind, are worth being worked carefully, crafted on an excellent quality paper with the best metal, and be turned into a piece of art for everlasting preservation and contemplation.

It’s not that damned easy!

This is my second exhibition at Galerie Clairefontaine and the title for this show is “It’s not that damned easy!”. I still paint with my fast, course paint stroke and in the rough way I always have done, I’m a kind of self-willed painter and I go my own way. Most of my paintings are influenced by my neighborhood and people and places I know very well. “It’s unbelievable how many odd people there are in this place” (Amandas Ong, Elephant Magazine, 2014). It’s easy to see my paintings as “simple”, but I always do my best to load them with some kind of intrinsic value. I have my own universe where there are no absolute norms, to regulate what is worth of being chosen as subject for artistic creativity.I have never tried to be politically correct. But I have a nice little public in both Europe and United States, I’m very happy for that! (Kent Iwemyr)

La Havane est un défi photographique. Même ceux qui n’y sont jamais allés ont de la ville cette image pittoresque véhiculée par la photographie et le cinéma : des gens nonchalamment adossés à leurs vieilles américaines bichonnées avec amour ou s’encadrant dans les fenêtres de maisons coloniales à la splendeur déchue et au crépi écaillé – et toujours dans ce coloris puissant si typique des Caraïbes.
Yvon Lambert n’a pas succombé à la tentation de sonder ce « charme morbide » de La Havane. Son moyen d’expression est la photographie en noir et blanc qui, dépourvue du caractère descriptif de la couleur, attire notre attention ailleurs. Bien plus qu’un simple état des lieux, ses photographies de La Havane sont une tentative de dialogue avec la ville et ses habitants. Yvon Lambert y a séjourné plusieurs fois entre 1996 et 2000. Et au fil du temps, ces rencontres ont gagné en densité, la curiosité et l’intérêt du début laissant place à une sorte de familiarité avec les protagonistes. The Galerie Clairefontaine will show a selection of photographs taken during the events of the Cuban Revolution.

These impressive photographs show Fidel Castro and Che Guevara as the heroes of the Cuban Revolution of 1959-60. They are an exceptional example of photojournalism’s role in chronicling history.

Photographers such as Burri, Korda and Naranjo record political events, and offer a glimpse behind the scenes in the corridors of power.

Nachdem Roland Schauls in seiner letzten Ausstellung 2014 im MNHA  überwiegend Hochformate mit dem Thema “Luxemburg/Joseph Kutter” gezeigt hat, sind in seiner diesjährigen Ausstellung in der Galerie Clairefontaine eine Reihe Querformate, auf welchen Strandszenen dargestellt sind, zu sehen. Zusätzlich wird eine Serie schmaler Hochformate, eine Reihe eigener und eigenwilliger Figuren, welche der Künstler als ” Sommernachtstraum ” betitelt.

Diese neuen Arbeiten, überwiegend auf einer Goldimprimitur ausgeführt, bestechen durch ihre zeichnerische Verve und Leichtigkeit. Sie greifen auf klassische kunstgeschichtliche Stereotypen zurück und werden,in der von Schauls gewöhnten,scheinbar lässigen, spielerischen Art von ihm zeitgemäß neuinterpretiert.
